Director - The Mindful Tutor; Calm Coach Tutor; Kids Yoga Instructor; Bush Flower Essences Consultant
Hi! I’m Emily, AKA The Mindful Tutor.
My passion is supporting students to find confidence, care, and calm in their studies to enable a positive learning mindset at school and beyond.
Tutoring is often associated with ‘getting better grades’, but the ways to achieve this can look very different for each individual student. As The Mindful Tutor, I support academic learning alongside emotional wellbeing to help every student realise their full potential and thrive.
Building up rapport with each student is very important to me, so I take the time to get to know my students so as to best help them meet their learning and personal goals. My combined skills and experience in academic student support, mindful practices and flower essence remedies allow me to work holistically with those clients who wish to explore this approach. When I’m not with my students, I love time outdoors getting back to nature with my own children and, you guessed it, learning new skills.
I’d love to discuss how I can help bring balance back for your child so you can relax and see them thrive.
The Mindful Tutor Story
Since moving to the Sunshine Coast from the UK in 2005, I have fallen in love with the Coast lifestyle and feel very fortunate to be able to bring up my family here surrounded by beauty and nature.
I discovered my passion for education teaching English to international students, and I have taught numerous students from all around the globe.
From there it was a short step to working in Learning Support, supporting students through high school. Language teaching has given me a great background in differentiation for students of diverse needs, and through experience I have discovered what an impact additional emotional support can have on a student’s mindset.
Who Do We Help?
Tutoring is often associate with “getting better grades”, but the ways to achieve this can look very different for each individual student. As The Mindful Tutor, I wish to support academic learning alongside emotional wellbeing:
- For students who suffer from anxiety and stress, which frequently leads to loss of confidence and self-esteem.
- For students who are overwhelmed by school work which can lead to apathy and disinterest, or frustration.
- For students who need to learn skills and direction in time management, planning and organisation (of any age).
- For students who experience difficulty with attention, writing, reading or working memory.
- For students struggling with a subject, homework or class content.
Why Mindful?
Confidence, Care and Calm
Confidence: Building up confidence is key to learning; without it the brain struggles to retain, analyse or understand information. Without the confidence to have a go, it can be easier to give up and shut down with ‘I don’t understand, I can’t do it’. This fear of failure can become overwhelming, but academic support alongside understanding and encouragement can ease the frustration and give students the confidence to try.
Care: Learning how to take care with work and organisation is also a vital skill. Throughout high school, a major cause of stress and anxiety is often disorganisation; not knowing how to manage and plan out time, leaving homework or assessments to the last minute. Learning how to plan for assessment and exams and finding a way to manage organisation are key skills for senior grades and for future education.
Calm: I am passionate about heping students to find calm as a base to start learning from. Stress impacts our ability to concentrate, focus and learn, so a variety of simple movement or breathing techniques can make a huge difference to a student’s ability to cope at school. These tools are suitable for all ages and situations both in and outside the classroom and can potentially equip students for life in many uncomfortable, difficult and anxious situations.
